Trenchard Crowned 17th annual Shipwreck Beads Modified Nationals Champion

Elma, WA - Jeremy Richey of Phoenix, OR looked to repeat last year's performance and end up at the top spot. Richey led the field to the green flag in the 40 lap feature. Aberdeen's Zack Simpson took the early lead from Richey. The caution flag would wave on lap one for Sam Carlisle of Cosmpolis and Don Martin of Yakima, as both got together in turn one. Simpson led the field to the green on the restart, jumping out front quickly as Jesse Williamson of Coburg, Ore moved into the second spot. Campbell River, BC driver Jason Beaulieu raced side by side with Richey for a handful of laps before moving into third. Simpson had tough company with Williamson and Beaulieu but continued to keep his momentum on the high side of the 3/8 banked clay oval.

Jason Beaulieu started to reel in Simpson for the lead, as on lap 9 Beaulieu made contact with Simpson and took over the lead. Lap 12 saw Simpson slow in turn one, bringing out the caution. Jason Beaulieu had Williamson on his back bumper, as Saint Helens, Ore driver Brad Martin sat in the third spot looking for a mistake by the top 2 cars. Martin moved into second on the restart, but lap 14 saw the caution flag once again, this time for a multiple car incident in turn one. Mark Carrell of Redmond, Ore moved his way into the top three, and into second spot, setting his sights on Beaulieu. Carrell looked smooth on the inside groove of the raceway but Beaulieu had more power on the high side. Lap 20 saw Williamson make a move on Beaulieu for the lead, Beaulieu raced hard down the backstretch, looking to get the lead back, but would spin to a stop in turn four.

Late in the 40 lap feature, Nick Trenchard of Kalamath Falls, OR moved his way into the top three, and looked to take the lead from Williamson on lap 22. A late race spin from Don Martin in turn four set up a green, white, checkered attempt for Carrell and Brad Martin. Carrell look to the inside going into turn one, but couldn't make the pass. Trenchard would go on to win his second Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals and broke the streak of 9 different winners of the event. Trenchard was the 2014 winner of the event. Carrell, Brad Martin, John Campos, and Craig Hanson rounded out the top five. Earlier in the evening Austin Kerrigan of Aberdeen won the C-Main, with Medford, Ore driver winning the B-Main.

PHRA Dwarf Cars:

Josh King of Red Bluff, CA led the field to the green flag with Kelso's Jess Turner Sr side by side into turn one. Turner took the lead momentarily, although King took the lead out of turn two on the low side of the raceway. Eagle Point, Ore driver Brock Peters moved into the second spot, getting around Turner. Ryan Martinez of Portland, Ore look to the low side of Turner, but couldn't make the pass for the third spot. King looking comfortable out front running the high side of the raceway slowly pulling away from the field. The battle for third continued to heat up between Turner, Martinez and Gaston, Ore driver Corey Estaban. Estaban took the third spot from both looking to track down Peters and King. Lap 10 saw the caution come out for Woodland's Chuck Jones as he spun in turn two.

Peters took the advantage of the restart to make a move for the lead, looking to the low groove. Peters took the top spot away from King on lap 11 with Estaban making it a three car battle for the lead. King would be shuffled back to third as Estaban looked to the inside of Peters for the lead in turn one on lap 14. Estaban looking for one spot better then the night before had tough company with King back into the second spot. Lap 19 saw King make a move out of turn four and take the lead. Estaban made sure King didn't run away with the lead as both drivers battled side by side for the lead. A late race caution allowed Estaban one more shot at King, but King had more momentum on the high side and would go on to win the 25 lap PHRA Dwarf Car feature. Estaban, Martinez, James Brinster, and Brock Peters rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Shane Youngren, Andy Lemmons, and Marson Lewman. Scramble winner went to King, and the two B-Main events went to Youngren and Dylan Chrisman

Racing will resume next Saturday night for PEPSI Night at the races with the 360 Sprint Cars, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, Northwest Focus Midget Series and Outlaw Tuners. Gates open at 5:30PM with racing at 7PM.
