Winebarger and King Victorious on Night 1 of Shipwreck Beads Modified Nationals!

Elma, WA - Grays Harbor Raceway saw red hot action for night one of the 17th Annual Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals featuring the Washington Modified Tour. The PHRA Dwarf Cars were also in action for the Dwarf Car Nationals on the 3/8 banked clay oval.

David Soulek of Challis, ID set the field for the 25 lap Race of Champions feature event, with Klamath Falls, Ore driver Nick Trenchard on the outside. Trenchard took the early lead from Soulek going into turn one as Albert Gill of Medford, Ore moved into the second position. Gill looked to the inside of Trenchard, but couldn't make the pass on the opening lap. The battle for third between Corbett, Ore driver Collen Winebarger and Lane Zerbin of Campbell River, BC was the battle to watch. Winebarger took over the third position and set his sights on Gill in second. Lap 4 saw Winebarger take over the spot. Trenchard slowly pulled away from the field as Winebarger sat in second looking to take any advantage on a mistake by Trenchard. Lap 8 saw the caution flag fly for Colville driver Tiana Berkeley, stopping in turn two.

Trenchard's restart was flawless as he pulled to the lead. Winebarger had tough company as Coburg, Ore driver Jesse Williamson moved into the third spot from deep in the field. Caution flag would fly once again on lap 9 for debris on the front stretch. Winebarger and Williamson saw opportunity to make a move for the lead on Trenchard. Winebarger looked to the high side of the raceway a few times, but couldn't make the pass. Trenchard running the low side and Winebarger up top saw side by side racing action on the long green flag runs. Winebarger took the lead on lap 15 down the front stretch from Trenchard. Winebarger slowly pulled away, as Trenchard had Williamson looking to take over the second spot.

Lap 22 saw Medford, Ore driver Brian Poppa spin to a stop in turn two, bringing out the caution, setting up a three lap shootout between Winebarger, Trenchard and Williamson. Winebarger looking quick on the top took the lead, Trenchard looked to the inside in turn one and raced side by side with Winebarger for the last few laps. Trenchard looked to pull off a slide job in three, sliding up the track, and raced side by side with Winebarger to the line, with Winebarger picking up the win by 0.026. Trenchard, Williamson, Mark Carrell of Redmond, Ore and Campbell River, BC driver Jason Beaulieu rounding out the top five. Twelve heat races were ran earlier in the evening with heat race wins going to Jesse Bailey, Jason Beaulieu, Matthew Drager, Jeremy Richey, Jesse Williamson, Collen Winebarger, and in the second set of heat races, Zack Simpson, Brian Poppa, John Campos, Lane Zerbin, Jesse Williamson and Mark Carrell.

PHRA Dwarf Cars

Henry Corbin III of Mollala, Ore led the field to the green flag in the 25 lap feature. Corey Estaban of Gaston, Ore took the early lead from Corbin III down the backstretch and led lap 1. Caution flag flew for Hillsboro, Ore driver Jeremiah Hester and Campbell River, BC's Brian Lee spinning in turn four. The restart saw a multiple car incident on the front stretch bringing out the caution before the field made it into turn one. Estaban lead the field on the restart, as Corbin III and Eagle Point, Ore driver Brock Peters battled for the second spot. Josh King of Red Bluff, CA looked lightning quick on the high side looking to track down Corbin III and Peters. Lap 6 saw Corbin III and King battle for second, with Peters looking to capitalize on any mistake. Ryan Martinez of Portland, Ore look to join in on that battle making it a four car battle for the second spot allowing Estaban to pull away comfortably.

Lap 9 saw King move into the second spot on the high side of the raceway, with Martinez on his back bumper. King and Martinez battled side by side for second, with Martinez making a pass in turn three on lap 11. King looked to the inside and took the second position back a lap later. Lap 12 saw another caution for Chuck Jones of Woodland spinning in turn two. Estaban had tough company on the restart, as King looked to the inside for the lead but couldn't make the pass. Estaban and King raced side by side for a handful of laps with Martinez looking to chase both drivers down. A late race caution for Cascade Locks, Ore driver Kevin Benson and Marty Holmason of St. Helens, Ore gave King another chance at Estaban. King looked to the inside on the restart but couldn't make the pass stick. Lap 23 saw King take the lead from Estaban in turn one and go on to pick up the PHRA Dwarf Car feature. Estaban, Martinez, James Brinster of St. Helens, Ore, and Brock Peters rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Martinez, Shane Youngren of Tigard, Ore, King, and Brock Peters.
