Beaulieu Wins Washington Modified Tour Feature

The sun was shining bright, and temperatures were in the low 80's for race two of the 2016 season at Grays Harbor Raceway. On tap on Saturday was the Washington Modified Tour, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, Sportsman Sprints, and the Outlaw Tuners.

Washington Modified Tour

Vancouver driver Don Jenner set the pace for the 25 lap Washington Modified Tour feature. Jenner led the way, with Tom Sweatman of Cosmopolis looking to chase him down. Sweatman took the lead from Jenner on the backstretch on lap 2. Port Hardy, BC driver Lawrence O'Connor moved into the third position, while Brian Izzi of Hoquiam and Cosmopolis driver Sam Carlisle battled for the fourth and fifth position. Jenner looked to get the lead back from Sweatman, hunting him down, getting to the back bumper and letting Sweatman know he was there. The Battle for third started to heat up between O'Connor, Izzi, and Campbell River, BC driver Jason Beaulieu, who already has one win on the Washington Modified Tour. Beaulieu took the fourth spot from Izzi, setting his sights on O'Connor. The first caution of the feature came out on lap 10 for Tacoma's Mike Knox, as he spun in turn two. Sweatman led the field to the green flag, with O'Connor taking the second spot away from Jenner, but the yellow once again flew, for Kyler Moore of Seabeck spinning in turn four.

Sweatman led Beaulieu, Jenner and Izzi to the green flag, and continued to lead the competitive field of modifieds. Beaulieu slowly started to reel in Sweatman, for position. B-Main winner Scott Miller of Shelton moved his way through the field to the top five. Miller battled with Jenner and Izzi for the third, fourth and fifth position. Miller's night would end with a violent flip down the front stretch after contact from Jenner bringing out the red flag on lap 22. Miller did walk away from the incident under his own power. Beaulieu led the field to the green flag for the last handful of laps, and pulled away to pick up his second Washington Modified Tour win of 2016, and his first of the year at Grays Harbor Raceway. Sweatman, Izzi, Jenner, and Lane Zerbin of Campbell River, BC rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Jenner, Sweatman and Moore, with Miller winning the B-Main.

Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks

Last week's winner Brenton Schnitzer of Shelton led the field to the green flag in the 20 lap feature. Hoquiam's Jack Parshall would get the lead on the start, with Schnitzer looking to chase him down. The battle for third between Aberdeen's Shane Kerrigan, and Will Madison of Sequim started to heat up, but the caution flag flew for Rochester driver Scott Fritts, as he spun in turn four on lap 2. On the restart Parshall got a great jump on Schnitzer and Madison. Schnitzer fought his way to the back bumper of Parshall, looking to the inside, but couldn't make the pass. A three car incident in turn one brought the caution flag out on lap 4.

On the restart, Parshall was on his A game, getting a great jump on the rest of the field. The top 2 drivers continued to pull away, but behind them, a lot of racing action all over the 3/8 banked clay oval. Kerrigan and Tyson Blood of Olympia battled for the third and fourth position, while Madison and Ryen Haney and Elma battle for the fifth position. Parshall made his way to lap traffic, which allowed Schnitzer to get to the back bumper. Schnitzer looked to the inside of Parshall a handful of times throughout the race, but couldn't make the pass for the lead. Parshall used lap traffic to his advantage late in the feature to slowly pull away and go on to win his first Street Stocks feature of 2016. Schnitzer, Kerrigan, Blood and Madison rounded out the top five. Schnitzer, Kerrigan, and Parshall also picked up heat race wins earlier in the evening, with Spanway's Tom Hecker getting quick time.

Sportsman Sprints

Making the trek to Elma from Snnohomish, WA, Derek Roberts led the field to the green flag with Kevin Kirkpatrick of Bellingham taking the early lead from Roberts. Edmond's Devin Barnes looked to chase down both Roberts and Kirkpatrick in the third position. Kirkpatrick slowly pulled away from Roberts running a great line on the raceway as Barnes looked to chase down Roberts for second. The battle for the fifth spot between Everett driver Brett McGhie and Bert Johnson of Lake Stevens was one of the battles to watch as the lead cars started to separate from each other. Caution would come out on lap 12 for McGhie and Johnson in turn four.

The restart gave Roberts a shot at Kirkpatrick for the lead. Roberts look to the inside, but couldn't make the pass. Caution once again would fly for Sedro Woolley driver Roger Oudman as he would spin in turn 4 on lap 18. Roberts looked to the inside of Kirkpatrick on the restart, Kirkpatrick had more momentum and started to pull away. Roberts tried once again on the white flag lap but ran out of time, Kirkpatrick took the checkered flag, Roberts, Oudman, Barnes, and McGhie rounding out the top five. Roberts picked up the heat race win earlier in the evening with Oudman getting fast time.

Outlaw Tuners

The Outlaw Tuners made their first appearance of 2016. Tenino's Chad Norton and George Lovell of Wishkah led the field to the green in the 15 lap feature. Norton took the early lead from Lovell, Wishkah driver Don Briggs Sr looked to the inside of Lovell for second, but couldn't make the pass. Jason Parmalee of Aberdeen moved into the second spot, and didn't take long to get to the back bumper of Lovell for the second spot. Parmalee took the second spot from Lovell on lap 5. Parmalee now had his sights set on Norton, trying to reel him in for the lead. Parmalee ended up with mechanical issues, pulling to the infield, giving the second spot to Briggs Sr. A handful of cautions allowed Briggs Sr. chances to take a shot at Norton for the lead. On the final lap, Briggs Sr. looked to outside of Norton, taking the win at the line, picking up his first win of 2016. Earlier in the evening Norton picked up the heat race.

Racing resumes next Saturday night with 360 Sprint Cars, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, and Outlaw Tuners. Gates open at 5:30pm with racing at 7:00pm.
