Schnitzer Wins Modified Feature, Howard Sweeps Dwarf Car Weekend!

The IMCA Modifieds and PHRA/AMCA Dwarf Cars were in action for the Timber Cup, along with the NARC King of the West 410 Sprint Cars. A great field of cars in both divisions made for some exciting racing.

PHRA/AMCA Bandits Dwarf Cars

Brandon Wiley of Santa Maria, CA and Tacoma driver Tylor Howard set the front row of the 25-lap feature event. Howard took the early lead as Wiley looked to chase him down for the lead. Gaston, Ore's Corey Esteban joined in on the battle, moving into second, getting by Wiley. Esteban set his sights on Howard for the lead, making a successful pass in turn two early on. Mike Chadwick of Hillsboro, Ore worked his way into a podium position, getting by Wiley. Howard stayed within striking distance of Esteban as Chadwick and Wiley were right there as well. Esteban worked his way into lap traffic, looking to extend his lead slightly. Lap 7 seen Corbett, Ore's Doug Pirtle spin in turn four, bringing out the caution. On the restart it was Esteban, Howard, Chadwick, and Wiley leading the rest of the field. Howard once again stayed close to Esteban, waiting for any mistake. Late in the feature Howard took the lead from Esteban, as both drivers battled back and forth. Esteban went to the high side in turn four taking the lead back. Howard would wait for that moment to get by Esteban and take the lead with just a handful of laps to go. The battle for second was very exciting at the end, as Wiley and Chadwick worked their way by Esteban at the checkered flag. Howard picked up the win, Wiley, Chadwick, Esteban and Molalla, Ore driver Henry Corbin III rounded out the top five. Heat races went to Wiley and Howard earlier in the evening.

IMCA Modifieds

With a strong field of 18 cars. Jason Tole and Elliott French, a pair of Hoquiam drivers shared the front row. Tole took the early lead, as Seabeck's Craig Moore worked his way into second, and looked to the outside of Tole and taking the lead on the opening lap. Campbell River, BC driver Chris Beaulieu joined in on the battle for the lead, shuffling Tole back to third. Beaulieu took over the lead, but the caution flag flew for a multiple car incident in turn one. Moore led Beaulieu, Tole, and Shelton's Brenton Schnitzer to the green flag. Schnitzer worked his way into third, looking to track down Moore and Beaulieu. Moore put some distance on Beaulieu and Schnitzer, as Austin Rognlin of Elma looked to make it a battle for third, staying close to Schnitzer. Lap traffic loomed ahead for Moore as Beaulieu started to pick up some distance. Lap 9 saw a battle for the lead between Moore, Beaulieu, Rognlin and Schnitzer. Beaulieu shuffled back to fourth as Rognlin and Schnitzer took over second and third. Rognlin made it to the back bumper of Moore as a lapped car ran the low side of the raceway as the two leaders. Moore worked his way around the outside of the lapped car, as did Rognlin and Schnitzer. Moore had no room for mistake, with Rognlin and Schnitzer looking to take over the top spot. Schnitzer worked his way into second, getting by Rognlin. Robert Jenner of Vancouver worked his way into the top three, as Schnitzer worked his way by Moore for the lead on lap 18. Jenner also made a move into second, shuffling Moore to third. A late race restart saw Schnitzer lead Jenner, Moore, Beaulieu and the rest of the field to the green flag. Jenner went to the high side, and was shuffled back multiple positions, as was Moore. Beaulieu worked his way back into second. Rognlin saw tough company behind him from Geoff Morris of Victoria, BC and Tumwater's Tyson Blood. Schnitzer continued to put some distance on Beaulieu, as he ran the low side of the raceway. Schnitzer picked up the win over Beaulieu, Rognlin, Blood and Morris. Scott Miller picked up the Elma Lane's Hard Charger, going 11 positions, finishing 7th. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Oakville's Brian Harding and Chris Beaulieu.

Racing will resume next FRIDAY night as the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Northern SportMods and IMCA Stock Cars will take to the 3/8 banked clay oval during the Wild West IMCA Speedweek. Gates will open at 4:30PM with racing at 6PM. There will be no racing on Saturday, just a Friday night event. For more information go to www.graysharborraceway.com
