Simpson, Austin Kerrigan and Sweatman GH County Fair WINNERS

By: Aaron Reed

The 2021 Grays Harbor County Fair was in full swing during the week and on the final day, the 3/8 banked clay oval of Grays Harbor Raceway saw the Shipwreck Beads IMCA Modifieds, Cut Rate Auto Parts Super Stocks and Hornets in action. A handful of times mother nature tried to wash the event out with a few heavy showers but all events were completed.

Cut Rate Auto Parts Super Stocks - Iron Man 50

The yearly 50 lap Iron Man event for the Super Stocks saw a change from past years event. Instead of running two, 25 lap features, the event was changed to one, 50 lap feature. Larry Paladin of Hoquiam led the field to the green flag. Olympia driver Chuck Goodman ran in second before Rodger Perry of Belfair took over the position. Right away the third position saw a three-car battle between Goodman, Shelton's Tim Martin and Jason Tole of Hoquiam. Paladin continued to lead, with Perry running second. Tole and Martin battled for a handful of laps, with Tole taking the third position. On the early green flag run Perry made the race closer getting within striking distance of Paladin. Austin Kerrigan of Aberdeen battled with Tole for third running the high side of the raceway. Perry looked to the outside of Paladin for the lead, making a side-by-side battle on lap 10. Perry took over the lead a lap later as Kerrigan moved in on Paladin for second. This gave Kerrigan a shot at the lead, where he was successful taking over the top spot from Perry. Lap 20 saw mother nature bring in a brief heavy shower sending the cars back to the pit area. The track was reworked and the Super Stocks returned to the raceway.

Kerrigan led Tole, Perry, and Paladin to the green. Tole stayed right with Kerrigan waiting for any mistake. Tole looked to the low side a handful of times but couldn't make the pass. Scott Fritts of Montesano worked his way into third after an early race caution looking to make it a three-car battle. Lap 25 saw Tole run the high side, getting close, as Kerrigan continued to keep the lead. The caution flag flew on lap 30 for contact between Martin, Daryl Brumfield of Satsop and Rich Hannold of Spanaway, causing heavy damage to Brumfield and Hannold. Kerrigan continued to lead on the restart, with Tole in second. The battle for third between Fritts and Paladin was the race to watch. Fritts worked his way by Paladin bringing Perry with him, making it a three-car battle for third. Unfortunately, Fritts saw contact with Goodman late in the feature ending his evening. Late in the feature Tole and Paladin battled for the second position, gaining ground on Kerrigan. Contact between Paladin and Tole brought out the caution, as Tole spun in turn four. A six-lap dash saw the battle for the lead between Kerrigan and Paladin with Perry within striking distance if any mistake occurred. Paladin made a few attempts at the lead but it was Kerrigan picking up the win, Paladin, Perry, Tole and Martin rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Kerrigan and Matt White of Hoquiam.

Shipwreck Beads IMCA Modifieds

18 IMCA Modifieds took to the raceway for 25 laps. Port Orchard's Steve Bulpitt and Elliott French of Aberdeen set the front row. Bulpitt took the early lead as Yakima driver Don Martin moved into second. Brian Harding of Oakville and Mike Knox of Tacoma battled for third. Harding quickly looked for Martin in the second position bringing along Shelton driver Brenton Schnitzer, making it a three-car battle. Bulpitt looking strong out front slowly pulled away from the field as Zack Simpson of Aberdeen joined in on the battle for second with Harding, Schnitzer and Martin. Simpson looked low at Harding taking over second and wasting no time catching up with Bulpitt for the lead. Lap 7 saw Simpson take over the lead with a pass in turn one on Bulpitt. Harding, Schnitzer and Scott Miller of Shelton battled with Bulpitt for second until the caution flag flew on Lap 9 for Harding in turn one. Simpson continued to lead on the restart and wasted no time getting out in front of Schnitzer, Miller and Olympia's Tyson Blood. The two groove 3/8 banked clay oval saw drivers going high and low. Blood worked his way into second getting by Miller and Schnitzer as Simpson continued to pull away. Schnitzer and Miller continued to battle for third, as late in the feature Tom Sweatman of Cosmopolis worked his way into the battle. A late race restart saw Blood, Sweatman and Miller a shot at Simpson for the lead. Sweatman worked the high side looking to get by Blood for second but was unsuccessful. Simpson went on to pick up the feature event over Blood, Sweatman, Miller and Schnitzer. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Schnitzer, Blood, and Grey Ferrando of Dayton, Ore.

Hornets

Josh Walker of Centralia and Jacob Saulsbury of Spanaway set the front row of the 15-lap feature event. Saulsbury took the early lead from Walker in turn two but the caution quickly flew for Devon Harper of Olympia coming to a stop in turn four setting up a complete restart. Saulsbury took the lead again bringing Wishkah's Don Briggs Sr with him. Briggs Sr look to the high side and took over the lead in turn four as Saulsbury saw a right front tire go flat, making contact with Briggs Sr. On the restart it was Max Sanford of Belfair taking the lead. Just as the green flag flew, the caution flag once again came out for Tyler Sundstrom of Hoquiam. Making hard contact with the turn two wall. On the restart Sanford continued to lead as Cory Sweatman of Aberdeen was right there, taking over the lead on lap 3. Sanford settled back for second. Third saw a battle between Megan White of Bremerton and Zach Dalrymple of Olympia. Sweatman stretched out his lead to over a full straight away on Sanford and Dalrymple. A late race battle between Sanford and Dalrymple was the race to watch. Sweatman picked up the checkered flag, with Dalrymple, Sanford, Kaleya Onasch of Aberdeen and Spencer LeCompte rounding out the top five. Harper and Sundstrom were heat race winners earlier in the evening.

Racing will resume next Saturday night for Pepsi Night at the races featuring the 360 Sprint Cars, Limited Sprints, Hornets, and the Wild West Modified Shootout finale with the IMCA Modifieds. Gates will open at 4:30PM, hot laps at 5PM and racing beginning at 6PM.
