The 2009 Grays Harbor Raceway season officialy ended on Saturday Night as the 2009 Champions were honored at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Rochester.
After a great meal of Prime Rib and Garlic Chicken, Master of Ceremonies Phil Martelli opened the awards banquet by welcoming drivers, crews, sponsors and familys. Track and Class sponsors were also recognized for their continued support of the Raceway.
The top drivers in all six divisions, Whitney's Auto Group 360 Sprint Cars, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds, Triple X Ford Focus Midgets, Cut Rate Auto Parts Hobby Stocks, Cruisers and HiLine Homes Hornets were all honored. Highlighted by the crowning of the 2009 Champions Glenn Borden Jr. from Raymond in the Sprint Cars, Josh Muller from Montesano in the Modifieds, Snohomish driver Seth Hespe in the Midgets, and Aberdeen's Zack Simpson in the Hobby Stocks. As well as Olympia drivers Dana Austin and James Hinkley in the Cruisers and Rory Clevenger in the Hornets.
Special awards given out included Rookie of the Year winners, Orting's Logan Forler in the Sprint Cars, Joe German in the Modifieds, Ariel Biggs from Hoquim in the Midgets and Gig Harbor driver Derek Junell in the Hobby Stocks.
Most Improved Driver winners included JJ Dishneau in the Sprint Cars, Bremerton drivers, Dave Burns in the Modifieds and Keith Knowlton in the Hobby Stocks, as well as Jeremy Miller from Montesano in the Midgets.
The Sportsman of the Year award went to longtime Grays Harbor Raceway sponsor, car owner and supporter Pete Muller from Montesano.
Dedication awards were presented to car owner and driver Otto Jorgenson from Auburn for his support over the years and longtime track volunteer Ray Seaman from Elma. Sponsor Appreciation awards were given to Trev Wilson from Bulldog Trailers in Chehalis and Joe Robertson from Our Community Credit Union.
Big winners of the evening included Weston Smith from Raymond who won the drawing for the car trailer from Bulldog Trailers in the Hobby Stock Division and Ariel Biggs who won the Triple X Midget chassis from class sponsor Triple X Race Co.
Other announcements for 2010 included a mini series between Grays Harbor Raceway and Skagit Speedway in the Midget Division that will crown a Washington State Champion.
Something totally new that should bring some extra excitment to Grays Harbor Racewy in 2010 will be double file restarts in the Modified, Hobby Stock and Hornet divisions. This will eliminate the cone on the front stretch and allow passing when they pass the chalk line in turn four.
