Austin Kerrigan Wins Street Stock Iron Man Challenge!

Elma, WA - Budweiser Night at the Fair saw hot racing action at Grays Harbor Raceway during the Grays Harbor County Fair. The Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds and Outlaw Tuners took to the 3/8 banked clay oval in front of a great Fair crowd.

Brenton Schnitzer of Shelton led the field to the green flag for segment one of the Iron Man Challenge 50 lap feature. Schnitzer took the early lead as Aberdeen's Shane Kerrigan looked to chase him down for the top spot. First caution of the feature saw Scott Fritts of Montesano spin in turn four on lap 1. Schnitzer led the field on the restart with Kerrigan, and Jason Tole of Hoquiam looking to take over that top spot. Austin Kerrigan of Aberdeen also knocked on that door, quickly moving into the third spot around Tole. Schnitzer looking strong up front had tough company as Austin Kerrigan moved into the second spot on a lap 15 caution and set his sights on Schnitzer for the lead. Kerrigan took the lead on lap 16 out of turn four with a bump and run move. Shane Kerrigan looked to try and make a move for second, but couldn't make the pass. At the end of the first segment, Austin Kerrigan took the checkered flag, Schnitzer, Shane Kerrigan, Hoquiam's Jack Parshall, and Tole rounded out the top five. The final segment lined up on how the first segment finished.

The second segment saw Austin Kerrigan lead the field down to the green flag, as Shane Kerrigan moved into the second spot, but the yellow quickly flew for a incident on the backstretch involving Brandon Babcock and Tiffany MacDonald of Victoria, BC. Austin Kerrigan would choose the low side of the raceway on the restart as that is where the momentum would be on a very dry slick racetrack. Shane Kerrigan continued to run in the second spot, as Schnitzer and Parshall battled for third. Lap 27 saw second place driver Shane Kerrigan spin in turn one bringing out the caution. Austin Kerrigan had to time his restarts just right as Schnitzer and Parshall were right on his back bumper. Parshall took over the second spot on the restart as Schnitzer sat in third. Lap 45 saw third place running Schnitzer spin in turn two, also involved was Olympia's Tyson Blood and Jeff Daniel of Ocean Shores. The caution setup a 5 lap shootout between Austin Kerrigan, Parshall, and Tole. Kerrigan continued to run the low side and go on to win the Iron Man Street Stock Challenge. Parshall, Tole, Tom Hecker of Spanaway and Fritts rounded out the top five. Parshall and Austin Kerrigan were heat race winners earlier in the evening with Parshall picking up fast time.

Shipwreck Beads Modifieds

Tom Sweatman of Cosmopolis and Iron Man Street Stock winner Austin Kerrigan of Aberdeen set the front row of the 25 lap Shipwreck Beads Modified feature. Kerrigan and Sweatman raced side by side to the green flag with Kerrigan running the low side of the raceway. Lap 1 saw the caution flag come out for Oakville's Brian Harding, spinning to a stop in turn three. Sweatman led the field on the restart with Kerrigan on his back bumper. Shelton's Scott Miller look to the outside of Kerrigan for second, racing side by side down the backstretch but couldn't make the pass. Sweatman slowly pulled away from the pack as the battle for fifth started to heat up between Seabeck's Kyler Moore, Shane Kerrigan of Aberdeen, and Del Schnitzer fo Shelton. The third position saw a battle between Miller and Sam Carlisle of Cosmopolis as well. Lap 13 saw Olympia's Brian Izzi spin in turn four collecting Schnitzer and bringing out the caution.

Sweatman looked quick on the low side of the raceway, as Miller and Austin Kerrigan battled for second. Miller took over the second spot, setting his sights on Sweatman for the lead. Lap 21 saw Austin Kerrigan spin in turn four and Del Schnitzer making hard contact with the back end of Kerrigan ending the feature for both. Sweatman once again drove the low side of a very tricky racetrack for the last handful of laps. A late race caution setup a 3 lap dash, allowing Miller one more shot at Sweatman. At the end of the 25 lap feature, Tom Sweatman took the checkered flag. Miller, Harding, Moore and Carlisle rounded out the top five. Heat races winners were Sweatman and Austin Kerrigan.

Outlaw Tuners

Cory Sweatman of Aberdeen led the field to the green flag in the 15 lap Outlaw Tuner feature. Josh Wharton of Tenino moved into the second spot getting around Montesano's Brittany Diggle, but just as all that happened, the caution flag flew for Aberdeen driver Tyler Sundstrom slowing to a stop in turn two. The restart saw Sweatman jump to the early lead with Wharton and Don Briggs Sr of Wishkah as the top three. Caution flag flew once again on lap two as Diggle made contact with the infield tire in turn three. Sweatman looked to be the class of the field but he had no room for mistakes as Briggs Sr was right there waiting for any mistake. Belfair driver Max Sanford sat in the third spot as Myles Tozier of Montesano and Robert Shoberg of Aberdeen look to track him down but contact between Shoberg and Tozier saw Tozier spin on lap 7. Tozier continued on and the race remained under green. Sweatman continued to extend his lead and at the end of the feature Cory Sweatman went 2 in a row taking the checkered flag. Briggs Sr., Shoberg, Sanford and Chad Norton of Tenino rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Briggs Sr. and Wharton.

Racing will resume next Saturday night at the regular time as the Rolling Thunder Big Rigs will be in action along with the Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks and Outlaw Tuners. Gates will open at 5:30PM with racing at 7PM.
