Grays Harbor Raceway

Romig, Sweatman, Anderson and Scouller Feature Winners!

The weather has been great around Grays Harbor Raceway this season, and once again, there was perfect weather conditions for a great night of racing. The Northwest Wingless Tour, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds, Northwest Focus Midget Series, and the Outlaw Tuners were on hand for an exciting night of racing.

Northwest Focus Midget Series:

Shelton's Lee St. Paul and Doug Anderson of Puyallup had the front row covered for the 20 lap feature for the Northwest Focus Midget Series. Anderson would jump to the early lead, with Stanwood driver Jared Peterson moving into the second spot. It wouldn't take long for Peterson to get to the back bumper of Anderson, and look to try and take the lead from the rookie driver. Anderson on the low side of the raceway having more momentum started to pull away from Peterson. The battle for the third position between St. Paul and Shorline driver Michael Vollbrecht was one to watch. Nick Evans of Granite Falls joined in on that battle as well, making it a three car battle for third on lap 7. Tristin Thomas of Burlington, who was involved in a crash in the heat race, would work his way from the back of the field to get into the top five.

The first caution of the feature would come out on lap 13 for Evans, after contact with St. Paul in turn four, causing him to spin. Anderson led the field to the green flag, Peterson looking to make a pass on him for the lead on the restart, but couldn't make that pass. Anderson started to pull away slightly, as Tristin Thomas would work his way into the third position.Hannah Lindquist of Shorline would stop in turn four on lap 15. On the restart Peterson would look to the lowside and try to make a move on Anderson, but couldn't make the pass. A three car battle between Anderson, Tristin Thomas, and Peterson had the fans on their feet. Thomas made a pass on the high side of Peterson to take second. Thomas tried to make an attempt at the lead but couldn't make the pass. Anderson would take the checkered flag picking up his first career Northwest Focus Midget Series feature. Tristin Thomas, Peterson, St. Paul and Vollbrecht rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Peterson and Vollbrecht with Peterson picking up fast time.

Shipwreck Beads Modifieds/Washington Modified Tour:

Tom Sweatman of Cosmopolis has been the driver to beat this year. Looking to pick up another win, Sweatman had the outside front row starting spot, next to James Wolfard of Bremerton. Wolfard took the green, for the 25 lap feature, but the yellow quickly flew for a false start, bunching the field back up. On the second attempt, Sweatman would take the early lead. Graham Cook of Port Hardy, BC moved into the second position, but a lap 1 caution changed that as Aaron Weston of Cle Elum would spin in turn four. Sweatman would look great on the restart and pull away from the field quickly. Cook and Redmond, Ore driver Mark Carrell had the fans excited for a great battle for the second position. All through the field in the feature the fans would see battles for position while Sweatman continued to pull away.

Sweatman had the advantage of the low side of the raceway, but a handful of restarts throughout the feature had Cook and Carrell to the back bumper of Sweatman, but Sweatman would have the momentum and pull away. Carrell and Cook would put on a great battle for the second position, not only that, the battle for third with Scott Miller of Shelton and Port Hardy, BC driver Lawrence O'Connor had the fans up on their feet. Sweatman would take the checkered flag with Carrell, Cook, Scott Miller and O'Connor, who came from the B-Main to round out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Cook, Carrell and Sweatman with Victoria, BC driver Lane Zerbin winning the B-Main.

Northwest Wingless Tour:

The 25 lap Northwest Wingless Tour/Oregon Double Shot Series feature saw Dan Dunlap of Renton, and Auburn's Jonathan Jorgenson leading the field to the green flag. Mike Romig of Vancouver looked to the inside of Dunlap and Jorgenson to take the lead on the start, and was successful out of turn two. Dunlap would try and make a pass in three, but would only make slight contact. Tim Alberding who was the winner of the NWWT feature the last time they appeared at Grays Harbor Raceway tried to take the second spot from Dunlap, but couldn't make the pass. While Alberding and Dunlap battled for second, Romig would pull away from the field. Lap 4 saw Alberding make the pass on Dunlap on the low side of the raceway for the second position. Dunlap tried to make the pass, but was unsuccessful. Alberding would look to chase down Romig.

A handful of cautions allowed Alberding and Dan Dunlap to try and make a move on Romig. The final caution of the evening on lap 15 saw Brad Rhodes of Aloha, Ore spin to a stop in turn two. Romig bringing the field down saw Alberding on his back bumper. Romig pulled away slightly but not enough for a comfortable lead as Alberding was there if Romig made a costly mistake. At the end of the feature Romig would take the checkered flag, Alberding, Dan Dunlap, Guy Weedman, and Jake Gilman rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening went to Dan Dunlap, and Jonathan Jorgenson, as John Butler was fast time.

Outlaw Tuners:

With one win between Ryan Onasch of Aberdeen and Woodland's Cody Scouller, both drivers had the front row covered for the 20 lap Outlaw Tuner feature. Scouller and Onasch would race side by side to the green flag, with Onasch taking the lead on lap 1. The battle for third saw Jason Valentine of Aberdeen, Wishkah's George Lovell, and Ocean Shore's driver Dale Vacknitz Jr battle for position with Valentine maintaining the third spot. Scouller looked to chase down Onasch, lap 5 saw Scouller get side by side with Onasch and take the lead down the backstretch. Contact between Valentine and Vacknitz Jr. in turn four brought out the caution on lap 5. Onasch would get the lead back as the field would go back to the last completed lap.

On the restart, Scouller looked to the inside of Onasch and took the lead back once again, with the battle for third heating up between Lovell and Vacknitz Jr. Onasch would look to the inside of Scouller on lap 7, making the pass, but out of turn four, Scouller dove to the bottom of the raceway, and took the lead back from Onasch. Scouller would hold on to the lead and pick up his second feature win of the 2015 season. Onasch, Lovell, Briggs, and Vacknitz Jr rounded out the top five. Scouller was also victorious in the heat race earlier in the evening.

Racing will resume next Saturday night at Grays Harbor Raceway with the 360 Sprint Cars, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds, and the Outlaw Tuners. Gates open at 5:30, with racing at 7PM.
