On Saturday May 11th Grays Harbor Raceway continued to provide race fans with some wonderful action on the 3/8-mile clay oval. The winner’s circle that night would be made up of drivers all earning their first win of 2013 with the exception of one classification. The Northwest Extreme Sprints were in the house along with the Shipwreck Beads IMCA Modified, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stock, and Hornet divisions.
The Northwest Extreme Sprints paid their first visit of 2013 Saturday. Sammy Wright of Vancouver was the car to beat in the Schram Brothers Excavating/BDR Racing #11 John Boy. Wright would lead the entire distance to earn his first career Grays Harbor Raceway victory.
“I love racing at Elma,” commented Wright, “I had a lot of fun and the car was fast in the main. Earlier in the night we were struggling but come main event time our car was very quick up top.”
Making the tow from Salem, Oregon young Kady Adelman would finish in second place in her BC Motorsports/K&S Motorsports #6A Maxim followed by Cory Samuelson of Lake Stevens in the #17 machine. Completing the finishing order was Zach McCabe from Arlington driving the McCabe Motorsports/Davidson Excavating/Shark Racing Engines #46 XXX in fourth.
In Shipwreck Beads IMCA Modifed action it looked as if finally Kris Asche was going to capture his first victory. Asche of Shelton, in his Renegade Chassis #50K, was the pace setter for most of the race until lap twenty-two. Asche would lose the lead to the J&F Automotive/Baby Ready Mix #8 of Jeff Foster from McCleary. Foster would pace the field until a late race restart when he would be overtaken by Joe German from Wishkah. German would earn his second consecutive victory in 2013 putting his Wishkah Iron Works/Ozman Services Inc. #75X Skyrocket back in victory lane and was the only repeat winner of the night in any division.
“I had to work from the back due to the IMCA format,” said German, “I was running those guys in the front down but that last caution really helped me out. The track tonight was nice and smooth it’s great to get another win this year.”
Jeff Foster would finish in second followed by the Sweatman Trucking/D&D Dyno #11 of Tom Sweatman from Cosmopolis in third. Crossing the line fourth was Hoquiam native Zack Simpson driving the Jacknut Apparel/CNK Machine #12 Shaw while fifth was Del Schnitzer of Shelton in the #44 entry.
Defending track champion Jason Tole of Hoquiam returned to the Grays Harbor Raceway for his first race of the year in the Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks. Leading all but the first two laps of the main event Tole would return to victory lane in his Western Washington Construction/Crowell Brothers Automotive Repair #34 Camaro.
“I ran on the slicks and I really like running these tires,” stated Tole, “I used a new setup I really was wanting to try. My car handled really well in the feature I felt like I was on I-5.”
Finishing the night in second was Eddie Blood of Olympia in the Eddie’s Automotive/Fusion Graphics #97 Malibu followed by the Sweatman Trucking/D&D Automotive/Ewing Engines #11X of Cory Sweatman from Cosmopolis. The balance of the top five consisted of Tacoma driver Mike Knox in his Sam’s Auto Repair/Desperado Express #40 Camaro in fourth and the Northwest Mountain Winery/Wilcox and Flegel Petroleum Supply #28 Camaro of Brian Harding from Oakville in fifth.
Another defending champion would return to victory lane. Chad Norton of Tenino would earn his first win in the Hornet division to become the second different winner in as many races. Norton’s Free Metal Removal/Tire Dogs #75 would stay out in front for the entire distance en route to his triumph.
Jeff Warner in the #68 machine was second followed by William Wright of Aberdeen in the Kerrigan & Sons Trucking #17. Completing the top five was Peggy Harding from Oakville in her Eddie’s Automotive/Seattle Recycling #56 in fourth and Tenino’s Shane Norton fifth in the Free Junk Removal/Eddie’s Automotive #95 in fifth.
Grays Harbor Raceway will return into action this Saturday May 18th. Divisions on hand will include the 360 Sprints, Shipwreck Beads IMCA Modifieds, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, and Hornets.
