Elma, Washington- Chase Goetz of Snohomish was Saturday night’s big winner in the USAC Ford Focus Midgets at Grays Harbor Raceway on Saturday April 20th. The fifteen-year-old sophomore at Snohomish High would take the lead in the last ten laps of the feature to win the race. The night marked the first time that the young pilot of the Elma Lanes/Great Western Transport/Sandblaster Inc. #91 Beast has visited victory lane at the famed 3/8-mile clay oval.

For the majority of the race it appeared as if Jeremy Miller was going to earn the victory. Miller set a rapid pace in his MASCO Petroleum #44 Beast for several laps before being caught up by both Goetz and Snohomish’s Robbie Vaughn.

Vaughn was able to briefly take over the race lead in the Gaylon and Carla Stewart owned Sno-Lynne Machine #3S XXX. Miller was quick to take it as Vaughn soon would fall out of the race due to mechanical problems.

Goetz would chase down Miller and grab the lead on lap seventeen. He would lead the rest of the way expanding his lead to healthy distance and earn his first win at Elma but not his first triumph in a Midget. He earned a victory late last year in Oregon at the Willamette Speedway in Lebanon.

“This being my first win at Elma was very exciting,” commented Goetz, “I hope to bring many more to our racing team this year. I’d like to thank my Dad for setting up the car that brought me to victory lane. Also thanks to my sponsors Elma Lanes, Great Western Transport, Sandblasters inc. and Powdercoating Inc. for supporting me.”

Miller would finish a respectable second followed by the #29 of Dougie James from Richmond Beach. Chase Crum from Snohomish would place fourth in the Gaylon and Carla Stewart owned #91S while the top five was completed by Vaughn. Vaughn was quickest in time trials with at 16.149 second lap and was also the heat race winner.

The USAC Ford Focus Midgets have the week off at Grays Harbor Raceway. They will return to action on May 4th for their second race of the season at GHR. For more information log on to www.graysharborraceway.com.
